A Question

Why, in the world's largest economy, is there so much crime?

Some would say because of weak gun control. Others would say because of the unequal distribution of wealth. Still others would say because of the tendency in this country toward criminalizing so many different actions. Yet more people would say it is a result of our diversity and our freedoms. Some others would say because of the deterioration of "values." And there are those who think Americans are just more criminal-minded. My feeling is that if we knew what caused criminal behavior, we would all be out of a job.

I'm leaning towards the inequitable distribution of wealth, myself. But, I'm not reallly aware of many studies on the question. There surely is a lot of theorizing, but I haven't seen any hard data or anything. So I'm curious.

And it wouldn't necessarily be all that bad, really, if we were out of jobs. I probably would have continued with English and would hopefully be teaching in some nice little college town.

Nope, I guess it wouldn't be that bad to solve the problem of crime. I'd get a masters in American history. It would be interesting to see studies on this, but I'm not sure I'd trust them. There are an awful lot of variables in something like the cause of crime.
